Research conducted by employees of the Institute of Social Economy

MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECTS

Everyday life in the time of coronavirus

The aim of this project is to capture how the lives of Poles have changed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. For this purpose, a competition was organized in which participants document their experiences related to the situation at work, in the family and in the immediate environment, starting from the moment when the pandemic reached Poland.

We have analysed every form of memoirs - diary, blog or report - supplemented with graphic materials. They are a source of information about the professional, family and social life of the study participants. They also provide knowledge about the main problems of people and how to deal with crisis situations caused by the pandemic. It is also planned to publish the most interesting works.

The project also includes in-depth structured interviews with selected competition participants and representatives of institutions involved in mitigating the effects of the pandemic, the purpose of which is to assess the long-term consequences of the pandemic for households.

The competition was organized by the Institute of Social Economy of the Warsaw School of Economics and the Department of Quality of Life Research and Applied Sociology of the Institute of Sociology of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

The research is financed by the National Science Center as part of a research project led by Prof. dr hab. Piotr Błędowski “Households in times of coronavirus. Professional work, education and support in conditions of uncertainty - Gospodarstwa domowe w czasach koronawirusa. Praca zawodowa, edukacja i wsparcie w warunkach niepewności” (2020/39/B/HS5/03121).

“INFLATION IN THE EVERYDAY LIFE OF POLES - A COMPETITION FOR JOURNALS AND DIARIES”

After many years of break, double-digit inflation appeared in Poland. Using the biographical method research aims to illustrate how Poles deal with this situation, what strategies they use and how their everyday life changes. For this purpose, a competition for diaries and journals from November 2022 - April 2023 was organized. The analysis of the submitted works makes it possible to capture the image of the society of this turbulent period.

DIARIES OF THE UNEMPLOYED

Experience of unemployment and trajectories of exclusion from the perspective of social policy and sociology

The main element of the project is a nationwide competition for the diaries of the unemployed. On their basis, the scientists will conduct research aimed at analyzing the trajectory of unemployment in Poland in 2016-2017. The situation of the unemployed will be analyzed in four contexts:

(1) family,

(2) social,

(3) institutional and

(4) political.

The selection of these contexts will allow to obtain a full picture of unemployment thanks to the use of both the instruments of public policy science, especially social policy science, and sociology. An important part of the project is an attempt to answer the question about the new understanding of unemployment and the identification of its new social features, which in the past did not play a significant role in the characteristics of unemployment.

Calculator of costs of inaction - Kalkulator kosztów zaniechania (KKZ)

The main goal of the project was to create conditions to increase the effectiveness and cohesion of social policy for all local government units of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship by developing and testing an innovative model for conducting active social policy in 25 local governments.

More about project

Calculator of costs of inaction - introducing innovative solutions in Mazovia in the field of social policy in the area of analyzing the costs of not taking activating and supporting activities.

The main objective of the project was to create conditions for increasing the effectiveness and cohesion of social policy for all local government units of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship by the end of 2014 by developing and testing an innovative model for conducting active social policy in 25 local governments. The aim of the project was to create a utility KKZ model available to all local governments of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship - a tool supporting active social policy for decision-makers and implementers of local social policy.

The Warsaw School of Economics team was responsible for the scientific and research side of the Social Calculator (which is one of the products created as part of the project). The main task of the Team was to develop the costs of abandonment from the theoretical point of view. It was the first project of this type in Poland (and one of the few in the world).

The most important effects of the work of the members of the Team include, first of all, the creation of a definition and conceptual framework for the costs of inaction, the development of a unique algorithm for identifying activities and the consequences of inaction, the preparation of a mathematical foundation for the costs of inaction and the indication of potential data sources (and the need for new information) can be used in the Social Calculator. The work of the Team was based on both scientific studies and consultations with experts and the results of field research.

On the basis of the analyzes carried out, a number of scientific publications were created.

The project was financed by the National Science Center (UMO-2012/07/D/HS4/01778) and co-financed by the European Union from the European Social Fund.
