History of the Department

The Department emerged from the Department of Construction Economics and Investment, established by the Senate of SGPiS in 1964. It underwent multiple transformations while maintaining its profile focused on construction, particularly residential construction and tangible investments. The unit operated under the following names:

  • Department of Construction Economics and Investment (1964-1978)
  • Division of Construction Economics and Investment at the Institute of Economics and Organization of Industry and Construction (1978-1982)
  • Department of Construction Economics and Investment (1982-1992)
  • Department of Investment Analysis (1992-1994)
  • Department of Investment and Real Estate (1994-2013) 

From January 1, 2014, after merging with the Department of Corporate Finance, the Department formed the Institute of Corporate Finance and Investment. Within the Institute, the Division of Investment and Real Estate was established, which from February 2014 was called the Division of Innovative City. As of October 1, 2016, the Division of Innovative City was transformed into the Department of Innovative City, which became an independent unit separated from the Institute. As of November 1, 2024, the Department’s name was changed to the Department of Real Estate Market and Innovative City.

Mission of the Department

The Department of Real Estate Market and Innovative City aims to establish the European Center for Urban Order, supporting the transformation of European cities and formulating their development strategies to become friendly, green, fair, healthy, resilient, harmonious, safe, sustainable, intelligent, inclusive, and solidary.
City development strategies should respond to complex and multidimensional global challenges. In particular, they should aim to provide all residents, especially vulnerable groups, including women, children, people with disabilities, and the elderly:

  • access to adequate, energy-efficient, safe, and affordable housing and basic services
  • access to safe, affordable, sustainable, and easily accessible public transportation systems
  • easy and universal access to safe green areas promoting social integration and the same public space.

and to achieve sustainable urbanization promoting social inclusion and opportunities for participation in integrated and sustainable planning and development of human settlements.

In pursuing this goal, the Department will undertake research and advisory tasks and create strategic partnerships with other research and educational centers, both domestic and foreign.
