Institute of Markets and Competition was established on April 2, 2013 as a result of the transformation of the Department of Market and Competition Analysis which operated under this name since 1992. Director of the Institute is Associate Professor Roman Sobiecki who is also a Dean of Collegium of Business Administration.

The roots of the Institute of Markets and Competition date back to the Department of Political Economics which was established at the Central School of Planning and Statistics in 1949. Therefore, the Institute of Market and Competition should be regarded as the oldest Warsaw School of Economics’ organizational unit.

In 1957, four departments of political economy were separated. They handled four faculties: Production Economics, Finance and Statistics, Domestic Trade, Foreign Trade. The Department of Markets and Competition Analysis was based on the research, teaching experience and the intellectual potential of scientists from the Political Economy at the Faculty of Production Economics. The long-term consolidation of compatible organizational departments affiliated to the Collegium of Business Administration resulted in the Institute’s of Markets and Competition establishment.

In addition to the Department of Market and Competition Analysis following the Departments have participated in the process of consolidation:

The Department of Rural Development (former names: Agricultural Market Unit of the Institute Markets and Competition, Department of Agribusiness, Department of Agricultural Economics and Food Economy) currently the Unit of Market Analysis at the Institute of Market and Competition. The Department of Strategic Management (formerly Department of Economics of Industry) which in 2011 was merged with the Department of International Business creating an organizational unit called Strategic Management Department, currently the Competition Strategy Unit at the Institute of Markets and Competition.
