Richard H. Thaler urodził się 12 września 1945 r. w East Orange w stanie New Jersey jako syn Roslyn i Alana Thalerów - nauczycielki i agenta ubezpieczeniowego. Studia licencjackie (B.A.) ukończył w roku 1967 w Case Western Reserve University, naukę kontynuował w University of Rochester, gdzie w 1970 r. uzyskał tytuł doktora.
Obecnie jes profesorem na Uniwersytecie Chicago. W pracy naukowej zajmuje się ekonomią behawioralną, podejmowaniem decyzji, skupia się na badaniach w dziedzinach łączących nauki ekonomiczne z psychologią. - Wybrane publikacje książkowe
