Pursuant to Article 204, item 1 of the Act on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018, doctoral training ends with the submission of a doctoral dissertation. The procedure for awarding the doctoral degree is divided into two different stages, depending on the format of education
- Doctoral students of the SGH doctoral school
In line with § 27 (1) of the Regulations at the SGH Doctoral School, completion of education at the Doctoral School is conditional upon obtaining learning outcomes at the 8th level of PQF (Polish Qualification Framework) and submitting the doctoral dissertation with a positive opinion thereon from the doctoral supervisor(s).
The procedure for the conferment of the doctoral degree begins with the submission of an complete application to initiate the proceedings for the conferral of the doctoral degree to the Dean of the relevant collegium through the Dean of the Doctoral School.
The Dean of the Doctoral School sends the application, together with the required attachments, to the chairperson of the council for the relevant discipline through the Dean of the relevant collegium. The candidate is required to submit the doctoral dissertation within the deadline specified in the individual research plan.
The following attachments shall be attached to the application:
- Printed doctoral dissertation (5 copies) and an electronic version in a computer file.
- A positive opinion from the candidate’s supervisor(s). Before formulating their opinion, the supervisor(s) shall check the dissertation using the Single Anti-Plagiarism System (JSA).
- Acceptance of indicators generated in the anti-plagiarism report.
A statement by the candidate that he/she has prepared the dissertation by him/herself and holds full personal and economic copyright rights in it — confirmed by the candidate’s supervisor(s).
- A copy of a certificate or university graduation diploma certifying that the doctoral candidate is fluent in a modern foreign language and has reached at least B2 level of proficiency (originals to be presented for inspection).
- A list of current scientific achievements, including at least:
- one research article published in a scientific journal or in peer-reviewed proceedings from an international conference, which, in the year when the final article was published, were included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued under Article 267(2)(2)(b) of the Act, or
- one scientific monograph published by a publishing house which, in the year when the final monograph was published, was included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued pursuant to Article 267(2)(2)(a) of the Act, or a chapter of such a monograph.
- Copies of articles and monographs referred in the list.
- Statement(s) of co-authorship(s) of articles/monographs referred in the list (if applicable).
- Biblimetric analysis from the SGH Library.
Bibliometrics
- Confirmation of obtaining learning outcomes for a qualification at Level 8 of the PQF, in accordance with the Act of 22 December 2015 on the Integrated Qualification System, fulfilling the conditions set out in § 10 item 3.
- A in Englishand Polish.
Moreover, a doctoral candidate has to:
- Submit a doctoral student’s report for the last year of study.
- Complete the doctoral seminar in USOS.
- Return the doctoral student ID card.
The current rules for submitting the doctoral dissertation, templates, and a checklist of documents are made available to fourth-year doctoral students on the SGH SharePoint cloud. Files are accessible after logging into the SGH domain account.
A doctoral candidate should:
- hold the professional title of magister (Master), magister inżynier (Master Engineer) or equivalent entitling them to apply for the award of a doctoral degree in the country of the higher education institution which awarded the title/degree;
- have confirmed learning outcomes for the qualification at Level 8 of the PQF, where the learning outcomes for the knowledge of a modern foreign language are confirmed by a certificate or a graduation diploma, certifying the knowledge of that language at a proficiency level of at least B2;
- have at least:
- one research article published in a scientific journal or in peer-reviewed proceedings from an international conference, which, in the year when the final article was published, were included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued under Article 267(2)(2)(b) of the Act,
or - one scientific monograph published by a publishing house which, in the year when the final monograph was published, was included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued pursuant to Article 267(2)(2)(a) of the Act, or a chapter of such a monograph,
or - an artistic work of major importance.
- one research article published in a scientific journal or in peer-reviewed proceedings from an international conference, which, in the year when the final article was published, were included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued under Article 267(2)(2)(b) of the Act,
Method to verify the learning outcomes for qualifications at Level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework for doctoral candidates – SGH Doctoral School students:
The confirmation of the achievement of learning outcomes for qualifications at Level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework is a confirmation of the completion of the full training program at a doctoral program, issued by the university that provided the doctoral school program. Completion of the full training program is understood to include any discontinuation of doctoral school training due to the submission of a doctoral dissertation.
The relevant document is prepared by the administration office and signed by the Dean of the Doctoral School, and it is then attached to the doctoral candidate’s application.
- Printed doctoral dissertation (5 copies) and an electronic version in a computer file.
- Extramural doctorate
Doctoral candidates have the option of preparing their doctoral thesis in a taught programme (doctoral schools) and via the extramural mode. In the case of an extramural doctorate, the doctoral applicant must apply for the appointment of a supervisor (or supervisors) before the procedure can be commenced.
Pursuant to Article 182 of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, a candidate who applies for a doctoral degree through the extramural mode must pay a fee for the relevant procedure to be conducted.
The university concludes an agreement with either the candidate or the candidate’s employer (university) to cover the costs of the procedure. The fee may also be paid by another natural or legal person, as well as by an organisational unit without legal personality, including the candidate’s employer.
The procedure for the award of the doctoral degree is initiated in two stages.
- Stage 1
Prior to the commencement of procedure, the doctoral candidate must submit an application (with attachments) to the Dean of the College to initiate the procedure and ask for the appointment of a supervisor (supervisors) and an assistant supervisor.
A doctoral candidate should::
- hold the professional title of magister, magister inżynier or equivalent, or hold the diploma referred to in Article 326, item 2 point 2, or Article 327, item 2, entitling them to apply for the award of a doctoral degree in the country of the higher education institution which awarded the title/degree;
- have confirmed learning outcomes for the qualification at Level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework, where the learning outcomes for the knowledge of a modern foreign language are confirmed by a certificate or a graduation diploma, certifying the knowledge of that language at a proficiency level of at least B2;
- have at least:
- one research article published in a scientific journal or in peer-reviewed proceedings from an international conference, which, in the year when the final article was published, were included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued under Article 267, item 2, letter b of the Act,
or - one scientific monograph published by a publishing house which, in the year when the final monograph was published, was included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued pursuant to Article 267, item 2, point 2 letter a of the Act, or a chapter of such a monograph,
- an artistic work of major importance.
- one research article published in a scientific journal or in peer-reviewed proceedings from an international conference, which, in the year when the final article was published, were included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued under Article 267, item 2, letter b of the Act,
Method to verify the learning outcomes for qualifications at Level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework for doctoral candidates
The following are regarded as confirming the achievement of learning outcomes for qualifications at Level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework:
- a confirmation of the completion of the full doctoral training programme conducted pursuant to the Act of 27 July 2005 – Law on Higher Education, issued by the university which offered the programme;
or - a confirmation of the completion of the full training programme at a doctoral programme, issued by the university which offered the doctoral school programme, where the completion of the full training programme is understood to include any discontinuation of the doctoral school training due to the submission of a doctoral dissertation;
or - passing a doctoral examination before a committee appointed by the Dean of the relevant SGH College
- Stage 2 – submission of an application to initiate the proceedings for the conferment of the doctoral degree
As a prerequisite for the initiation of the proceedings for the conferment of the doctoral degree, the candidate must submit an application to the chairperson of the relevant scientific council of the discipline through the Dean of the college where the procedure was initiated.
The doctoral candidate is required to submit a doctoral dissertation by the deadline set by the Dean of the college.
The application should be filed with the following attachments:
- Printed doctoral dissertation (3 copies) and an electronic version of the doctoral dissertation in a computer file, together with a positive opinion from the candidate’s supervisor(s). Before formulating their opinion, the supervisor(s) will check the dissertation using the Single Anti-Plagiarism System (Polish acronym: JSA). Acceptance of indicators generated in the anti-plagiarism report is a necessary precondition for issuing a positive opinion;
- 2.A statement by the candidate that he/she has prepared the dissertation by him/herself and holds full personal and economic copyright in it; the statement must be confirmed by the candidate’s supervisor(s);
- A copy of a certificate or university graduation diploma (originals to be presented for inspection) testifying that the doctoral candidate is fluent in a modern foreign language and has reached at least B2 level of proficiency;
- A list of recent scholarly achievements, including at least:
- one research article published in a scientific journal or in peer-reviewed proceedings from an international conference, which, in the year when the final article was published, were included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued under Article 267, item 2, letter b of the Act, or
- one scientific monograph published by a publishing house which, in the year when the final monograph was published, was included in the list drawn up in accordance with regulations issued pursuant to Article 267, item 2, point 2 letter a of the Act, or a chapter of such a monograph, together with copies of articles and monographs;
- Confirmation of achieving the learning outcomes for a qualification at Level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework, in accordance with the Act of 22 December 2015 on the Integrated Qualification System, fulfilling the conditions set out in § 10 item 3. The doctoral dissertation must be submitted with a summary in English, whereas a dissertation prepared in a foreign language must be submitted with a summary in Polish. In the event that the doctoral dissertation is not in writing, a description in Polish and English must be attached.
