Long-term care for older people in Poland and other OECD countries

Event date:
27.02.2025, 9:40 - 12:30
A joint event organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the SGH Interdepartmental Centre for Research on Families and Generations will focus on the topic of long-term care for older people. It offers a unique opportunity to examine long-term care systems across OECD countries and compare them with the situation in Poland, particularly in the context of ongoing reforms and the rapidly aging population in both Poland and other OECD countries. By drawing on international comparison, the event aims to explore key challenges, opportunities, and potential solutions for improving long-term care system in Poland.

The event will commence with opening remarks by Professor Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak, PhD, Vice Rector for Research at SGH. This will be followed by Mark Pearson, Deputy Director of the OECD Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs (ELS), who will present an overview of the OECD’s work on long-term care. Building on this, Dr. Jacek Barszczewski, a Health Policy Researcher in the ELS, will present key findings from the OECD report Is Care Affordable for Older People?. His presentation will address critical affordability challenges, the rising long-term care expenditures driven by population ageing, and policy strategies to balance the availability of care with the financial sustainability of long-term care systems.

Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Dr. Hab. Piotr Błędowski, focusing on the current state of long-term care in Poland and its future directions. To conclude the event, researchers from SGH will also present an academic perspective on long-term care. Professor Paweł Kubicki, PhD will analyse the current public discourse and the implemented and planned public programs in the area of long-term care in Poland, highlighting potential turning points that could determine the success or failure of proposed reforms. Meanwhile, Dr. Wojciech Łątkowski will provide projections on the demand for care among older adults in Poland and discuss the impact of demographic trends on both the demand for care and the potential supply of care provided within households.
