Red tape in banking sector

Panel discussion titled „Red tape in banking sector – is it sustainable?” will take place on April 12th at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. The event is open to everyone.

The speech will attempt to answer the question whether the red tape (overregulation) in banking sector has grown in recent years and whether this process is sustainable. The growing red tape shall not only be limited to the regulatory measures imposed via various types of regulations, but it is necessary to have a look at the growing protection of consumers which shall be aligned with various obligations to be fulfilled. The speech will not be limited to the Polish case.

Keynote speaker: Jaroslaw Beldowski, Ph.D., SGH Warsaw School of Economics

Jaroslaw Beldowski follows two career paths, namely academic and professional. For the former he is the Assistant Professor at Warsaw School of Economics and Visiting Professor at Riga Graduate School of Law. For the latter he is a member of the Banking and Finance team at Dentons Warsaw where he advises international clients on regulatory matters. Previously he held various positions in the National Bank of Poland and Polish Financial Supervisory Authority. He was also the First Deputy President of the Development Bank in Poland. Currently he is the Chairman of the Partial Guarantee Fund for Agriculture in Ukraine – a financial entity with World Bank and European Commission support. Jaroslaw is the author of various publications devoted to the financial system. He was awarded the Copernicus medal by the Polish Bankers Association for his contribution to the development of banking law in Poland.

  • Prof. dr hab. Jacek Jastrzębski, Chair of the KNF – Polish Financial Supervision Authority

Jacek Jastrzębski is one of the leading Polish specialists in law and finance. He has a legal background as a graduate and professor at the Faculty of Law and Administration of University of Warsaw, as well as economic background as a graduate of SGH Warsaw School of Economics. He has also completed a prestigious ‘Professional LL.M.’ legal programme at University of California, Berkeley (United States). Jacek Jastrzębski combined his work in banking with his academic and scientific activities. For more than ten years he served as Deputy Director of the Legal Department at Powszechna Kasa Oszczędności Bank Polski. He has been employed as Professor at the Department of Civil Law of the Faculty of Law and Administration at University of Warsaw. In 2017, he was recognised in ‘Legal 500’s GC Powerlist: Central and Eastern Europe’, a list of the most influential lawyers in Central and Eastern Europe. As part of his scientific activity, he deals with civil law, commercial law and financial market law, and he is an author/co-author of more than 80 scientific publications. His PhD and habilitation dissertations have received awards from Państwo i Prawo monthly. He participated, as a speaker and host, in a series of national and international conferences, including events regarding financial market.

  • Dr Cezary Stypułkowski, CEO of mBank

Doctor of Law from the University of Warsaw. In the late 1980s, as a Fullbright scholar, he studied at the Business School of Columbia University in New York. He headed the management board of Bank Handlowy S.A. for 13 years. From 2003 to 2006, he served as chairman of the board of PZU Group. From 2006 to 2010 he worked at J.P. Morgan in London, where from 2007 he was managing director of J.P. Morgan investment bank for Central and Eastern Europe. Cezary Stypułkowski was a member of the international advisory board of Deutsche Bank’s board of directors, the international advisory board of INSEAD, and the Geneva Association. Since 2012 he has been co-chairman of the Emerging Markets Advisory Council of the IIF in Washington, DC.

  • Prof. dr Hab. Agnieszka Słomka-Gołębiowska, Professor of the SGH Warsaw School of Economics

Agnieszka Słomka-Gołębiowska is a Professor at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics with research focus on governance and sustainability. She holds PhD in Economics and MSc. in Finance and Banking from the Warsaw School of Economics. She is an author of numerous articles in JCR journals, books as well as a speaker at business and academic conferences. In 2019, she received the Corporate Governance Personality Award. She is a mentor at the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin and global ambassador of the Bank of America and Vital Voices Partnership Program on women entrepreneurship and empowerment. Currently, she is a Chairwoman of mBank and Board Member in Grupa Pracuj and  Ghelamco Invest. She holds seat at the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance, assisting the European Commission on Sustainable Finance Framework, as well as Advisory Board of Sustainable Investment Forum Poland (POLSIF).
