Summary of the discussion
Of the different city development concepts, the ‘smart city’ and the ‘sustainable city’ have received considerable attention in the academic and political debates. A new trend is emerging in the literature where the two concepts merge, thus resulting in ‘smart sustainable city’ and ‘sustainable smart city’. The objective of this presentation is to discuss the definitional differences of these two concepts and elaborate on their implications. The case of Malaysia, and respectively, the official discourse on ‘sustainable smart cities’ will be featured in the discussion.
