Master’s Thesis Seminar

The Master’s Thesis Seminar is a compulsory element of the programme, supporting students in the preparation of their dissertation. It begins in Semester 3 and runs across two semesters.

Credit Allocation

Semester 1 of Master’s Thesis Seminar: 8 ECTS
Semester 2 of Master’s Thesis Seminar: 12 ECTS

Assessment 
Each semester is assessed independently:

Semester 1 of Master’s Thesis Seminar: “Pass” grade upon satisfactory participation
Semester 2 of Master’s Thesis Seminar: Pass” and final grade, recorded on the evaluation form and submitted via the APD system as the dissertation grade.

This structure ensures continuous academic support and formal evaluation aligned with the standards of postgraduate study.
 

Master’s Thesis Seminar Declaration


Students must declare their seminar via USOSweb by the end of Semester 2. Failure to do so will result in no credit being awarded for the diploma seminar.
Students resuming studies or changing supervisors must submit a new declaration form signed by both the student and the proposed supervisor.
Supervisors must be SGH academic staff holding at least a doctoral degree (PhD).

Dean’s Instruction on the Rules for Declaring and Enrolling in Master’s Thesis Seminar

Pursuant to § 19 of the Rules and Regulations for First- and Second-Cycle Studies and Long-Cycle Master’s Studies at SGH Warsaw School of Economics, and Annex 1 thereto, the following provisions govern the selection and registration for the Master’s Thesis Seminar:

  1. Students shall select a supervisor from among academic staff members who have submitted an offer to conduct a Master’s Thesis Seminar for the relevant mode of study in the current academic year.
  2. Registration for the seminar shall be conducted exclusively via the online platform (USOSweb).
  3. A student’s registration must be formally accepted by the selected supervisor. Without such acceptance, the registration shall be deemed invalid.
  4. The online registration system shall remain open until the conclusion of the second semester. By this deadline, students must complete both the registration and obtain the supervisor’s acceptance, thereby fulfilling the conditions set out in points 2 and 3 above.
  5. Should a student fail to select a supervisor by the deadline specified in point 4, a supervisor shall be appointed by the Dean.
  6. To request a change of supervisor, the student must submit a formal application to the Dean, accompanied by written consent from both the current and proposed supervisor.

Changing Plans

During the course of the seminar, students may decide to revise their plans — for example, by changing the dissertation topic or supervisor. In such cases, a formal request must be submitted to the Dean, accompanied by written consent from both the current and proposed supervisor.


Institution-Commissioned Theses

If the dissertation is commissioned by an external institution, the student must submit a formal request to the Dean, including the supervisor’s written opinion.
