SGH PHD Student Conference “Science – the answer to uncertainty”

The Council of PhD Student Union at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics is happy to invite you to participate in the second national SGH Doctoral Student Conference in the series "Science – the answer to uncertainty" entitled "Science, economy and artificial intelligence".

The conference will be held from February 29 to March 2, 2024, in a hybrid form (online and stationary, on the premises of the SGH). Participation is free of charge. If interested, participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

About the conference

The aim of the conference is to exchange knowledge, experiences, and views in the fields of economics and finance, management and quality sciences, and political and administrative sciences. It will also be an opportunity to integrate the academic community, including young researchers, and representatives of the business world around the subject of the challenges and threats we face in the current socio-economic situation and in the face of developing artificial intelligence. We also create an opportunity for young researchers to meet and exchange views with representatives from the world of science and business.

The conference consists of two parts

  • Doctoral Colloquium on Thursday
  • Conference presentations and posters on Friday and Saturday

The formula of the conference assumes follow-up discussions and comments after the presentations, which are intended to enable the Speakers to obtain valuable feedback.

Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak

Vice Rector for Research and Director of the Institute of Statistics and Demography at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. Member of the Committee on Demographic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and leader of the Polish research group at SHARE 50+ (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe). In 2008–2009, she served as an undersecretary of state in the Polish Ministry of Labour and Social Policy; she was also a member of the Supervisory Board of the Polish Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) and a member of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority. In 2007–2009, she was a Vice Chair of the Social Protection Committee (SPC) of the Council of the EU. In 2010–2017, she managed projects at the Educational Research Institute (IBE) in preparation of the implementation of the Polish Qualifications Framework. Her areas of specialisation include demography, pension systems, the labour market, social policy, health and education.

Grzegorz Pawlina

Grzegorz Pawlina, Professor of Finance, Lancaster University Management School. His research interests focus on corporate finance, debt valuation, and the problem of optimal exercise of real options in game-theoretical situations. His work has been published, among others, in Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Review of Finance, Review of Accounting Studies, Journal of Corporate Finance and Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control. Grzegorz held visiting positions at such institutions as Aarhus University, the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business, and Warwick Business School.

Andrzej Zybała, the associate professor and Chair of the Public Policy Department at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. His areas of specialization include public policy, public governance, labour/industrial relations, and social dialogue. In 2021, he published a new book called ‘The Public Policy in Poland: Culture, Governance, and Development’. Opportunities and risks in times of complexity and uncertainty”. The coordinator (on the level of project partner) of two research projects on labour relations from the European Commission (2017-2018, 2020-2022).

Deputy Dean of the Doctoral School at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. Professor of SGH Warsaw School of Economics at the Institute of Markets and Competition, Collegium of Business Administration. Research interests: transnational corporations, innovations in the economy, internationalization of enterprises in the digital economy. An author and co-author of over 140 academic publications, including: „Platformization of transnational corporations”, „Non-Equity Modes as International Business Strategy”, and „Transnational Corporations and Global Search for Resources”.

Tymoteusz Doligalski

Tymoteusz Doligalski is a research and teaching fellow at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics and head of the e-Business Unit. His current research concerns business models of online companies, digital platforms and the application of artificial intelligence in marketing. Supervisor of student teams winning global search engine marketing competitions (GOMAC and GOMC). He publishes articles and research notes on the doligalski.net blog.

  • Professor Urszula Kurczewska, PhD 

Sociologist, head of the Department of Sociology at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. Author of numerous scientific publications on lobbying, Public Affairs and interest groups in Poland and the European Union, political and social challenges in the EU, sociology of politics. Ethics expert in the EU Horizon Europe program, manager of many national and international research projects m.in Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence “Future of Europe in Research and Studies” (2018-2022), head of the Senate Science Committee at the SGH, scholarship holder of the American Fulbright Commission, member of the Civic Legislation Forum at the Stefan Batory Foundation. Until recently, she was a professor at the Faculty of Sociology at the University of Warsaw and previously coordinator of the “European Union” program at the Polish Institute of International Affairs and a lecturer at Collegium Civitas and the National School of Public Administration.

  • Professor Adam Szyszka

Full Professor at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, Head of the Centre of Interdisciplinary Research in Financial Markets, Editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Management and Economics; previously for many years at the Poznan University of Economics; Fulbright Doctoral Scholar and Kosciuszko Foundation Post-doctoral Fellow at Columbia University in New York; visiting fellow at Harvard Business School, Freie Universitaet in Berlin, Tsinghua University in Beijing, and University of Adelaide in Australia. Research interests include: financial markets, behavioral finance, market efficiency, asset pricing, capital market regulations, corporate finance, links between financial markets and the real economy.

Rector of the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business. Scientific and research interests of Professor Kaleta concentrate on three main areas: small and medium enterprise economics, industrial policy, competition strategy and strategic management. The scientific achievements of Professor Kaleta include nearly 180 publications. He is the organizer of cyclic conference entitled “Strategic management in theory and practice”. He has been an academic advisor to 11 doctoral students. Professor Andrzej Kaleta has been an advisor in strategic management processes in enterprises and communes of Lower Silesia, he has participated in the work of the Wrocław Development Office and has been an expert on priority technologies for sustainable development of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship.

Full professor at the Department of International Management at SGH Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). Head of three Postgraduate Study Programs in Public Relations, Coaching, and Mentoring.  He was Academic Director of the CEMS MIM Program, institute deputy director and head of department. His research and teaching interest focuses on Organizational Behavior and Management, Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT), Leadership, Business Communication and Cross-Cultural Management.

Jakub Growiec

Professor of Economics, employed at SGH Warsaw School of Economics and Narodowy Bank Polski. His research interests include, i.a., economics of economic growth and long-run impacts of automation and the development of artificial intelligence. He is also interested in the construction of production functions, measurement of productivity, growth accounting, and economic aspects of social capital. Laureate of the National Science Center Award (2020) and “Polityka” Scientific Award (2012).

Wojciech Pacho

The Dean of the Doctoral School at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, the head of the Department of Applied Economics, member of the Senate’s Programme Committee, presiding over the Programme Board of the Faculty of Economy. Graduate of the Main School of Planning and Statistics at the Faculty of Theory of Economy (SGPiS). The focus of his scientific and teaching interests is on macroeconomic issues, in particular on long-term phenomena. The author of numerous articles and book publications, including „Wpływ inflacji i podatku bezpośredniego na akumulację kapitału w przedsiębiorstwie”, „Podatki bezpośrednie a tempo zmian wartości kapitału przedsiębiorstwa”, „Stagnacja gospodarcza i innowacje techniczne w okresie przedindustrialnym”.

Jerzy Surma, Ph.D. Eng., is a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Digital Economy of the Warsaw School of Economics, and the head of postgraduate studies Cybersecurity Management and postgraduate studies Business Intelligence. He is a graduate of Department of Computer Science and Management at Wrocław University of Technology, and the Executive Program at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He worked as a visiting scholar at Harvard Business School, and as a professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His research interests include applications of Artificial Intelligence in business and cyber security of machine learning systems. Professor Jerzy Surma runs a popular science channel on YouTube “Jak żyć rozumnie w cyfrowym świecie”.

Piotr is the President of the Digital Poland Foundation, which promotes digitization as a competitive advantage for Poland. He has 19 years of experience in implementing projects in the new technology sector. He is a board member of the European AI Forum – the largest organization of European AI companies based in Brussels. He is the author or co-author of reports, articles, and public policies supporting the new technology sector, including artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G networks. He is a co-creator of the strategic NCBiR AI INFOSTRATEG program, which supports the implementation of AI in Poland with a funding of 840 million PLN.

Graduate of the University of Gdansk, Faculty of Law and Administration. Jan joined Microsoft in 2008 to deal with Academic Programs. From 2013, he managed a team dedicated to working with ISV partners, i.e. application developers. In 2017, Jan joined the STU team as Head of Azure Sales and then moved to the CEE Region, where he worked on digital transformation (application modernisation) of key customers in the region. In 2023, he took on the role of Commercial Solutions Sales Lead. Jan is responsible for the cloud solutions sales team of the largest Polish customers.

Przemysław Tomczyk, PhD in economics in the field of management sciences. He defended his PhD thesis at the Warsaw School of Economics in 2015. Assistant professor at the Department of Marketing at Kozminski University. He specializes in the role of artificial intelligence in scientific writing and science automation. Author of several dozen scientific publications and the YouTube channel “dr Przemek Tomczyk AI”.

Leszek Bukowski obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Warsaw in 2010. He worked as a lecturer at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology. For many years, he has been professionally involved in artificial intelligence. He has worked for Polish and foreign companies. He is engaged in popularizing knowledge about artificial intelligence and modern information technologies. He currently serves as the Chief AI Officer at VetApp.

We encourage stationary, active participation in the Conference and the Doctoral Colloquium. Speeches and reports can be prepared in English (preferred) or in Polish. Speakers are assigned to panels in accordance with the extended abstract (ca. 3 pages) or abstract for the poster, provided to the organizers.

Applications for active participation (with abstracts) are accepted on the registration form until January 26th, 2024.

Information about abstract acceptance/rejection will be sent by February 14th, 2024

Applications for passive participation are accepted in the registration form until February 25th, 2024

Katarzyna Górak-Sosnowska is associate professor at the Institute of International Studies and head of the Middle East and Central Asia Unit at SGH Warsaw School of Economics, Poland. Her research interests focus on Muslim minorities in Poland and wider Europe. She has published five monographs, including Deconstructing Islamophobia in Poland (2014) and Muslims in Poland and Eastern Europe (editor, 2011) as well as articles in journals such as Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, or Journal of Muslims in Europe and book chapters. In 2021, she was awarded with a grant by the European Commission (CERV-2021-EQUAL) to challenge the negative discourse about Islam in Poland.

Bogumil Kaminski is the Head of Decision Analysis and Support Division, SGH Warsaw School of Economics. He specializes in applications of advanced data analysis methods to support decision making in industry. He is an author of over one hundred research papers in the domain of business applications of forecasting, optimization, and simulation methods. He actively promotes usage of state-of-the-art research results in business.

Marek Kowalkiewicz is a Professor and Chair in Digital Economy at QUT Business School and QUT Centre for Future Enterprise. He joined QUT from Silicon Valley, where he led global innovation teams as a Senior Director at SAP. Before Silicon Valley, Marek worked in Singapore as Research Manager of the largest SAP Research lab in Asia. Prior to that, Marek was a Global Research Program Lead of one of SAP’s main research programs, as well as a Research Fellow at Microsoft Research Asia. He holds fifteen patents describing his contributions to enterprise software systems.
