The Award of the Dean of the Graduate Studies at SGH Warsaw School of Economics
The Award was established in 2019 and is awarded annually to alumnus of outstanding achievements in graduate studies.
The award distinguishes the best master’s thesis dealing with the most important current economic problems. The winner of the competition receives a cash prize of 10,000 PLN.
The competition consists of two stages. In the first stage, a group of alumni of the Graduate Studies who obtained the highest results during their studies is selected.
These people are sent an invitation to participate in the second stage of the competition.
At this stage, the diploma theses of those who wish to participate in the competition are assessed.
The theses are assessed by the Competition Committee.
The Cometee is composed of the Rector and Vice-Rectors of SGH Warsaw School of Economics, the Dean of Graduate Studies at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, the Chancellor of the SGH Warsaw School of Economics and a representative of the award founder.
During the evaluation, the Committee considers the originality of the selected topic, topicality of the research issues, the ability to formulate conclusions by the author of the work and the possibility of applying them in practice.
The results of the Competition are announced during the Graduation, and the name of the winner is placed among the previous winners on the board in front of the Graduate Studies Office.
The detailed course of the competition is regulated by the rules of the award.

Rules of the Competition for the Award of the Dean of Graduate Studies at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics
§ 1
1. These rules, hereinafter referred to as the “Rules”, specify the terms and conditions of the Competition for the Award of the Dean of Graduate Studies at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, hereinafter referred to as the “Competition”.
1. The Competition is organised by the Dean of Graduate Studies, hereinafter referred to as the “Dean”.
2. The Competition is held once a year.§ 2

§ 3
1.Eligible to participate are the graduates of graduate programmes (second cycle programmes) at SGH who:
- defended their thesis (hereinafter referred to as the “Thesis”) in the academic year preceding the year in which the results of the Competition are announced,
- belong to the group of 1% of SGH students with the highest mark average for all basic courses and major-related courses, excluding foreign language courses,
- declare their intent to participate in the competition.
2. The Dean prepares a list of persons who, as of 30 September, have the average overall mark calculated in accordance with the rules set out in the Studies Rules and Regulations which ranks them among top 1% of students with the highest mark average.
3. The Dean notifies persons selected in accordance with subsection 2 above, via e-mail, of their eligibility for the Competition.
4. An intent to participate must be confirmed by October 14th via e-mail with a scanned copy of the completed and signed application form.
The sample application form is included in Appendix No. 1 to these Rules.
All statements and consents included in the form must be marked as selected if an application form is to be processed. Consent to personal data processing is voluntary, however, it is impossible to participate in the Competition without giving such consent.5. To participate in the Competition, it is necessary to accept these Rules.
§ 4
1. he Competition participants are subject to assessment based on their thesis defended at SGH that covered a subject related to the most important current economic issues. Points are assigned as follows::
- the topic of the thesis relevant to the Competition theme - maximum 10 points;
- research tools - maximum 10 points;
- approach to the subject - maximum 5 points;
- language correctness - maximum 5 points.
2. The assessment is made by the Competition Committee that consists of:
- the Rector and all Vice-Rectors
- the Dean of Graduate Studies
- the Chancellor,
- representative of the award founder.

§ 5
1. The main award is the financial award of 10,000 PLN.
2. The award is subject to income tax, which will be withheld by the Organiser at a rate provided for by law.
3. Within 5 days after the Competition results are announced, the winner is required to provide personal data necessary for making a bank transfer and deducting the tax on the award. If the winner fails to provide such data, the Organiser reserves its right to pass the title of the winner to the next participant with the next highest number of points.
§ 6
1. The controller of personal data is the SGH Warsaw School of Economics.
2. SGH will contact the graduates referred to in § 3(3) of the Rules to notify them of their eligibility for the Competition, via e-mail, using e-mail addresses in the SGH domain. If it is likely that a graduate no longer uses such e-mail address in the SGH domain, SGH may send the notification to another e-mail address of the graduate, if they voluntarily provided such address to SGH.
3. For the purpose of notifying graduates of their eligibility for the Competition, personal data are processed pursuant to Article 6(1)(e) of the Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation), OJ EU L 119 of 4 May 2016, p. 1, incl. corrigenda, hereinafter referred to as the “GDPR,” and pursuant to the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1668, as amended).
4. Personal data of the graduates who expressed their intent to participate in the Competition, including for the purpose of disclosing their persona data to the representative of the award founder, are processed pursuant to the graduate’s consent, i.e., Article 6(1)(a) of the GDPR. The graduates give their consent by marking as selected a box next to the relevant consent in the application form. The consent is voluntary.
5. Information about the Competition winner, including the winner’s name and surname, and the title of their thesis, may be made public, by being published on the SGH website, with the winner’s consent. At the stage of notifying the graduate of the Competition results, SGH obtains the graduate’s consent for publishing the graduate’s data by sending a request via e-mail.
6. PPersonal data of the winner are processed, for the purpose of satisfying obligations arising from legal regulations on financial and accounting documentation and taxes, pursuant to Article 6(1)(c) of the GDPR and the Accounting Act of 29 September 1994 (Journal of Laws of 2019, item 351) and the Act of 26 July 1991 on Personal Income Tax (Journal of Laws of 2019, item 1387 as amended).
7. Information about the Competition winner’s thesis supervisor, including the supervisor’s name and surname; academic degree or title, and affiliation, may be made public, in particular by being published on the SGH website. For this purpose, personal data are processed pursuant to Article 6(1)(e) of the GDPR and the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science.
8. SGH provides the graduates referred to in § 3(3) of the Rules with the notice on personal data processing in accordance with Article 13 of the GDPR by means of including the notice in the application form.j.
