- How to start?
STEP 1: Choose Your Topic
Select a research topic that excites you and has strong research potential. Ensure that it is feasible within your available resources and time constraints.STEP 2: Prepare a Preliminary Research Plan
Define your research objectives, research questions, and hypotheses. Consider which research methods will be most suitable for achieving your project goals.STEP 3: Conduct a literature review
Explore existing academic work related to your topic. This will help you understand what research has already been conducted and identify gaps in the literature.Tip: The “Frascati Manual 2015 – Guidelines for Collecting and Reporting Data on Research and Experimental Development” can assist you in choosing a topic.
STEP 4: Find a research Supervisor
Seek out a faculty member (Associate Professor or Full Professor) who can confirm your research potential by writing a recommendation, which is required for the Doctoral School application (see § 11(1)(4) of the Admissions Conditions).STEP 5: Prepare the research proposal and required documents
Draft a detailed description of your research plans and gather all necessary documents (see § 11(1) of the Admission Conditions).STEP 6: Complete the online application
Fill out the application form in the Online Registration System (ISR) and pay the enrolment fee.STEP 7: Monitor your application status

- Stages of admissions
Admissions to the Doctoral School consists of 2 stages:
STAGE 1 – ASSESSMENT OF DOCUMENTS
The first stage of admission process does not need your physical participation.
If you score at least 45 points in the first stage, you will be qualified for the second stage.STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW
The interview consists of two parts:- covering the issue of your research intentions,
- related to issues concerning the discipline of the program you are applying for
The interview will be conducted in Polish for Polish candidates or in English for foreign candidates.
If you are living abroad, the interview will be conducted remotely, using electronic communication tools that transmit sound and image in real time.
- Description of your research intensions
The description of your research intentions (the so-called: proposal) is the most highly rated part of your application.
A proposal is an explanation of what exactly you intend to research, why it is important, and how you plan to conduct your research and prepare your PhD dissertation. It includes several key elements:
- Introduction – defining the research area, justification of the choice of topic, and explaining its importance for the development of the field of science
- Brief literature review – key items on the research problem with an indication of the gaps you intend to fill
- Major research questions – break down the main research problem into detailed issues that require analysis
- Research methods – description of the methodology you plan to use to solve the research problem
- Theoretical expectations and practical outcomes of your selected research problem
You will enter the content of each element of the research proposal directly into the application form in the ISR.

The opinion must be issued by a faculty member (Associate Professor or Full Professor / dr hab. or prof. dr hab.) associated with the scientific discipline in which you wish to pursue your education at the Doctoral School. Diploma or an extract of a diploma of graduating Master’s degree
If, at the time of registration in the ISR, you do not yet have your diploma but have already defended your thesis, you should attach a scan of the certificate issued by the relevant Dean’s Office, along with a scan of a declaration stating that the diploma will be provided by the deadline set by the Committee (in case of Polish university’s diploma).
If you have a foreign university’s diploma:
- diploma of long-cycle Master’s degree or second-cycle degree,
- a diploma supplement,
- legalisation of the diploma or apostille
Apostille or legalization – which one do I need? | NAWA.GOV.PL - a certificate confirming that the diploma entitles to study at a Doctoral School in the country of issue.
This certificate is not necessary if such information is included in the diploma or its supplement. In case of absence of a certificate and information in the diploma or in the supplement, is will be required to provide a foreign diploma recognition document issued by Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA).

IMPORTANT!: Applications to NAWA for the recognition of foreign diplomas must be submitted only via the SYRENA System (“full NAWA”).

- participation in research projects:
- a grant award decision or
- a copy of a grant agreement or
- a certificate specifying the nature of participation in the project;
- scientific publications:
IMPORTANT!: You may submit only three publications, published after 31 December 2019.- a journal article: the first page of the article,
- a book: the title page and the publication page,
- a chapter in a book: the table of contents and the first page of the article;
- participation in conferences:
The 5 highest-scoring conferences are evaluated, provided they took place no earlier than 1 January 2020.- certificates or programs confirming participation.
- participation in research projects:
IMPORTANT!: If you are eligible to be entered into the list of doctoral students, you will be required to submit the original versions of all documents to the Doctoral School Office, along with a personal questionnaire – printed from the ISR system. Remember that submitting the documents within the deadline is necessary for admission to the Doctoral School.
All documents you submit during the admission process can be in Polish or English. If the original document is in another language, a certified translation by a sworn translator must be attached.
- ISR – Online Registration System
The registration of candidates is conducted through the Online Registration System (ISR) system.
Complete your registration in the system by filling in all required information, uploading all necessary documents, and paying the enrolment fee.
A Doctoral School Office staff member will verify whether your documents are complete and correctly uploaded. Any missing documents or errors will be visible in the ISR.
All information regarding the admission process – including qualification for the second stage, the interview schedule, and eligibility for entry to the list of doctoral students – is communicated to candidates via the ISR.
IMPORTANT!: You will not receive email notifications about new messages in the ISR. Please check your ISR account regularly.
Access to the ISR will be closed at 4:00 PM (Polish official time) on the last day of the registration period.You will be admitted to the admission procedure if you complete your registration on time and correctly – that means:
- making a statement in the ISR that your proficiency in English is at a level that allows you to study at the doctoral school;
- filling in all tabs and uploading:
- a current photograph that meets the requirements specified in the ISR system,
- scans of relevant documents — in JPG or PDF format;
- paying the enrolment fee.

The enrolment fee amounts to PLN 300.
The fee must be paid no later than on the day of ending registration at the ISR.
